Ontario Bans Cellphones While Driving: Fine up to $500
By Charles Mwewa, Toronto, Ontario Mr. Chisanga Puta-Chekwe Awarded a SOAR Medal
COURT FORMS _________________
On October 26, 2009, Ontario Province introduced a new law banning all non-hands-free devices such as cellphones, portable DVD, video game players, BlackBerrys and hand-held GPS while driving. The new law is founded on the premise that both hands and eyes are needed in order to avoid traffic accidents. Drivers will now face a penalty for holding a hand-held device and changing stations on the radio at the same time.
The new law brings to halt drivers’ tendencies to chat, text or email while driving. The new law follows the findings by Statistics Canada that 20 percent of all collisions are caused by drivers using gadgets while driving.
Ontario is not the first province to ban the use of cellphones while driving. Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador already have laws banning the use of cellphones on the road. New York and California states and more than 50 countries around the world have also banned the use of gadgets while driving. The law, however, allows hands-free cell calls through headsets or earpieces. [Comment]
